Soldier Q&A

Frank D'Angelo US Airforce

Frank D’Angelo

US Air Force Tech Sergeant (E-6)

Enlist Date:

I enlisted on 9 March 1999.

How long have you been in the military?

I reached the 14-year mark in March 2013.

Do you plan to re-enlist?

Yes, I plan to re-enlist as soon as I am eligible to do so.  I want to make the Air Force a great career.

Why did you join?

It’s my opportunity to serve in the world’s best Air Force; competitive pay & good benefits; strong education…

Why did you pick the Service Branch you did?

The Air Force is a family tradition and the fact that the Air Force is the most high tech military branch across the world.

What is your military occupation?

My Air Force Specialty Code (AFSC) is 3D071 for Knowledge Operations Management.  The “7” represents my skill level in that field.

What is your current Duty Station?

My current duty station is the United States Strategic Command, Offutt AFB, Nebraska.  Before that it was Joint Base Lewis-McChord (JBLM) located in Washington State.

Best duty station?

Joint Base Lewis-McChord (JBLM), McChord Field, so far.

What are some are your past duty stations?

My previous permanent duty stations are Mountain Home AFB, Idaho and JBLM, Wash.

Best part about serving?

There are great promotional opportunities, plenty of travel, pride of being a part of U.S. Armed Forces, and serving with allied armed forces. Being a part of U.S. and world history!

What is the toughest / worst part about serving?

There is some travel assignments to undesirable locations and long deployments.

Your advice about enlisting into the military:

Talk to those who have been there; done that; and ask plenty of questions. Do it for yourself. Do it for your nation. Definitely know what you’re doing it for. The military is too important to do it without a reason. Your heart and mind have to be in it to make it worth it.

How would you advise someone to prepare for serving?

Set goals, then pursue them, but be flexible in your favor; for the better

How was boot camp (best/worse/funniest)?

Basic Military Training School (BMTS for the Air Force) can be a pain and frustrating, but it’s supposed to be. Ever single aspect of BMTS is designed for a learning purpose; every single one, whether you realize it or not. Be mature, pay attention, and learn all you can. Behave and participate with chivalry. Don’t act like you already know it all (“This is nothin’. I got this”). There is no room for selfish pride-teamwork. That can be considered as disrespectful and belligerent or contentious to the training instructors (TIs).

How long was boot camp?

In 1999, it was about seven (7) weeks long. Now its about 6 1/2 weeks long.

What is an average day like?

An average day can go without a hitch. Some days go on forever, and some days seem to go by quickly.
